In this episode serial entrepreneur and millionaire mentor, Shaahin Cheyene and his co-host a transformational coach, and forensic handwriting analysis, Bart Baggett talk about "Transformational Experiences in life".
I feel that that transformative experience has to be followed by a period of self-reflection, a period of retrospective reflection, that then will lead to an epiphany and a change.
For me, the first experience that I had was with meeting my first mentor, and before that was deciding to leave home and getting thrown, into the world with little or no experience about how the world works. That was my first one where I was like, holy, you know what, my life has just changed. I've got no stability, right? So the trauma of that. The fact that that shook me up Bart, really was, incredibly impactful.
The second step was meeting the sky, I met a mentor and I talked about this in my book Billion, how I became the king of the thrill podcast that comes up. And this guy had a transformative experience several times in the 60s and had become a leader in the civil rights movements. He had sued the government by himself and won. He was an incredible human being. And just being under his influence, for a period of time, was the second transformative experience for me, that changed the trajectory of my life.
You look at kids growing up in LA. Ronnie and kids growing up in LA, right, what do they do? Right? They went to school, they got married, they became a dentist, they became a doctor, you know what I mean? It's that beat. And if something doesn't happen, some transformation happens. something super impactful. Then, you follow that trajectory. We are not unique, like snowflakes, we are pretty freak in much the same. And every single one follows that trajectory, Bart, unless something happens now you can seek out transformative experiences, which is what Koch talks about, as one of his landmarks. You know, he talks about a number of landmarks. One is having unreasonable self-confidence, just this self-belief that's unshakable, which I believe I had, rightfully or wrongfully. So I just knew that I couldn't fail, mainly because I didn't know that I could fail. But in addition to that, it was this transformation, this experience.
Now that happens with a lot of people with travel, like, I'm sure the first time you went to India, that must just in and of itself, the first time seeing India must have been a transformational experience for you.

One of the things I wanted to talk to you about today was the concept of luck. I think both you and I have been very fortunate in our lives, and we've had a lot of opportunities that we have either forged or that have come our way. That's been a part of synchronicities that we've been involved in. Just our meeting was part of pretty interesting synchronicity. And one of the things that I was thinking about the other day, Bart, is what is luck? Is luck just a roll of the dice? The cards we dealt when we were born? Is there some component that’s just in the air? Or is it something else? Is it something that we can go out there and affect, or something that we've been affecting from day one?
When we talk about luck in the fact that we're financially successful, or people get lucky with an idea or timing, or just lucky to be born in a free country. Because I visited a friend of mine recently and she reminded me that she and her family escaped from Cambodia 35 years ago on a boat, on a dinghy, and came to America and didn't speak English. She wakes up every day grateful just to be in America and not being shot at. So that kind of perspective is humbling for the rest of us that were born here and went to an average middle-class school, and a lot of my friends from high school had pretty struggling lives like second divorces, working at Chili's, like they're just doing that thing. I just thought, What's the most outlandish thing I can think of? And let me go do that and I wasn't afraid to fail. And I did it over and over and again, and I kept getting up and getting kicked over and getting up. I think there's a little bit of luck. I think the definition most people use, at least in the self-help community, is luck is preparedness meets opportunity. And as an example, when I had an opportunity, I screwed it up. When I was 21. I published my first book, and this is back in 1987 or 1991. And I got a guy sitting in my living room, my dad, he goes, Hey! we could do this thing called an infomercial. And this was at the same time at Tony Robbins running infomercials, and I turned it down. I was 21 and didn't know what it was, I was so young and I didn't understand it. What was I thinking? It was an opportunity, but was I ready? Maybe not, but I think I could have been ready. But you know what, those come and go, and if you don't jump on that train, you just don't know. I was kicking myself and I did Okay in the end, but it was interesting because sometimes opportunities knock on the door, and you don't even see it. And years later, you're like, oh man! I could have done that.
What if luck was directly related to risk? So Nassim Taleb in his book, ¨Black Swan¨, talks about successful people and how their level of success is directly linked to the amount of risk that they take. So if you look at somebody who's employed at a lower-level position, his risk is minimal so he's guaranteed a paycheck. Whereas the guy that owns the company might not get a paycheck ever, so his risk is maximum. The amount of his reward in general in life can be traced back to risk, so I would almost ask or even argue, can luck be measured by what you said “preparedness,” but also to the ability to take risks and the interest in taking risks and the action that's involved in taking risks?

I realized by now that some of the things I say may contradict themselves, but you don't want to be one of those people who constantly is picking at the details, trying to find fault rather than that. I think it makes sense. And I look, I find myself being like that from time to time and I've got to correct myself and correct my path when I'm doing that. You want to capture the general energy, the vibe of what the person is saying, and how that information is useful to you.
Bruce Lee used to say absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is specifically your own, one of the key principles that I often talk about is the riches being in the niches. And the more niche you can get, the better off you will be. Blue Ocean thinking. I recommend that book. I like to constantly be Blue Ocean.
How do I do that? I find niches. I dominate those niches and become the dominant leader there until somebody else moves in. And then I make a decision if it's worth it to stay or if I branch out into another area of blue ocean.

Specialized knowledge is what you want to be. You want to be a specialist and the more niche you are, the better off you are. I know that I am one of the top people in the world at a very narrow band of stuff which is winning at Amazon, which is how to get my products to sell on the Amazon platform, how to get products to rank not only mine, but my students and other peoples. That's it. Most other things I hire other people to do, and oftentimes the result comes out excellent. Why? Because I'm a good manager of people. I'm a great project manager and I am an amazing systems builder. There are a lot of things that I absolutely fail at and that I am not a success at. But those are things that I am very successful at. Now, if you are not a specialized person, if you are a generalist, chances are you are not going to be very successful.
